FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Starting a Business   (back to top)

Women's Enterprise can help you throughout every step, from start up research to feasibility analysis to networking for the established business owner. We suggest that you come in for an initial consultation.  Click here to set up an appointment.

In spite of what you have heard on television, there is NO FREE MONEY from any government agency or foundation to start a new business, regardless of your gender, race, or economic status.  Most grants go to non-profit organizations or businesses that do research that is geared to crucial governmental projects. These grants are extremely specific in nature (for example: procedures for launching a satellite into orbit.) These funds are not available to those interested in opening common small businesses such as hair salons and restaurants. Most small businesses are started with personal savings, loans from "angels" (friends and family who invest) or small commercial and personal loans. However, there are internet contests and prizes that are available periodically. Thorough research is needed to ensure that the contests are legitimate.

We strongly feel that each individual should write his or her own business plan, for who would know your business better than you?  We offer classes and one-on-one consultation to assist you in writing your business plan.

Getting A Business Loan     (back to top)

There are conventional loans available, however, you need to do the research and write a business plan before approaching a lender.  No one will loan you money strictly because you are a woman or a minority.  Lenders don't care if you are male or female, young or old - they just need to know that you can pay the money back.  A good business plan is essential because a business that does not work on paper is not going to work in reality. Women's Enterprise provides training in market research, developing business plans and locating funding sources.

In order to qualify for a business loan, you will need a solid Business Plan with 2-3 years Cash Flow Projections, good credit history, and sufficient financial resources for a down payment.

Support Services / Classes     (back to top)

We offer business counseling, mentoring, and training to help you. Click here to register for any upcoming classes. Someone from WE will be in contact with you to confirm your registration.

Women’s Enterprise does offer partial and full scholarships for clients that cannot afford a class.  Click here to contact Women’s Enterprise about scholarships for classes.

Who Do You Help?     (back to top)

While our focus is women, all WE services are open to anyone interested in developing their business. Because business ownership is NOT gender specific, our services are also offered to men.

Help Getting Employment     (back to top)

Although we are not a job placement organization, the Fort Wayne Women's Bureau maintains an up-to-date listing of employment availability in the Fort Wayne area. Women's Enterprise offers a course (Getting Down To Business) that reviews interviewing techniques, resume writing, and goal-setting for the job seeker.

Business Certification     (back to top)

If your business is at least 51% woman or minority owned and operated, WE recommends you certify your business with the local, state and federal government. Certification is especially important if you would like to conduct business in the public sector.
